Light fidelity, hay Li-fi là giải pháp thay thế Wi-fi sử dụng ánh sáng để truyền tải dữ liệu với tốc độ cao. Điều đó có nghĩa là nó sử dụng ánh sáng có thể nhìn thấy từ bóng đèn để truyền dữ liệu – trong trường hợp này, ánh sáng phát ra từ bóng đèn LED. Phương thức này khác với Li-fi, sử dụng sóng radio để truyền dữ liệu, nhưng có chung điểm tương đồng ở chỗ việc truyền dữ liệu là hai chiều – hay nói cách khác, người dùng có thể upload và download dữ liệu như vẫn thường làm với wifi.

Các nhà phát triển công nghệ Li-fi đã sử dụng ánh sáng để quản lý dữ liệu bằng cách làm mờ hoặc sáng hơn, hay được bật hoặc tắt hoàn toàn. Ánh sáng truyền tải dữ liệu này không thể nhận ra đối với mắt người bình thường. Ánh sáng này chỉ có thể được “ nhìn thấy “ bởi một máy dò có tích hợp cảm biến, thực hiện công việc chuyển đổi tín hiệu thành dữ liệu như video, audio, email, website…

Có thể truy cập internet thông qua ánh sáng đèn Led nghe qua có vẻ tuyệt vời, nhưng thật sự thì người dùng chỉ quan tâm đến tốc độ và độ bảo mật mà nó cung cấp. Vậy so với Wifi, thì Lifi có tốc độ như thế nào ?

Trong bài test, tốc độ kết nối Li-fi có thể đạt đến 224 Gigabit/s. Đây rõ ràng là một sự khác biệt to lớn so với Wifi truyền thống 802.11ac, chỉ dưới 7 Gigabit/s.

Li-Fi vs Wi-Fi : bảo mật và phủ sóng :

Li-Fi có rất nhiều điểm cộng về bảo mật khi so sánh với Wi-Fi. Do phụ thuộc vào ánh sáng, Li-Fi không thể đi qua tường và cửa – vì vậy việc truy cập vào mạng có thể được kiểm soát dễ dàng hơn. Li-fi cũng không tạo ra nhiễu điện từ, do vậy nó có thể được sử dụng ở những nơi như bệnh viện và thậm chí trên máy bay, những nơi không chấp nhận việc nhiễu sóng.

Dù vậy, không thể di chuyển qua tường và cửa cũng là nhược điểm phủ sóng của Li-Fi, làm hạn chế phạm vi phủ sóng, tăng tính phức tạp khi lắp đặt mạng để mở rộng phạm vi.

Khi nào thì Li-Fi bắt đầu được sử dụng đại trà ?

Khái niệm về Li-Fi vẫn còn tương đối mới mẻ. Lần đầu tiên được giải thích trong talk show Ted trong năm 2011 do giáo sư Harald Haas trình bày, hiện nay ông cũng là giám đốc của trung tâm nghiên cứu và phát triển công nghệ Li-Fi tại trường đại học Edinburgh.

PureLiFi đã triển khai các sản phẩm Li-Fi trên khắp châu Âu và Signify (trước đây gọi là Philips Lighting) cũng đang bận rộn với Li-Fi. Và tất nhiên, Trung tâm nghiên cứu và phát triển LiFi cũng đang làm việc để đưa công nghệ vào đời sống. Nếu công nghệ có thể đạt được mục tiêu áp dụng đại trà, người dùng sẽ có sự kết hợp giữa Wi-Fi, Li-Fi và 5G, mang đến tốc độ truyền tải dữ liệu tuyệt vời.
